Does Plastic Surgery Increase Your Mojo?

May 2nd, 2012

banner 2 1 300x188 Does Plastic Surgery Increase Your Mojo? Some people think so, particularly with breast augmentation (breast implants) surgery.  It’s important to acknowledge that breast augmentation (or any cosmetic enhancement) cannot save a relationship, nor should someone consider plastic surgery to please their partner.  While the decision to undergo a cosmetic surgical enhancement should always be made for the right reasons, an online survey found the correlation between breast surgery and increased sexual activity interesting, to say the least.  It could be a clue as to why breast augmentation had been the number one sought-after procedure for women for 3 consecutive years, only finally being ousted by liposuction in 2011*.

In an online survey conducted by RealSelf, 61 percent of the respondents claimed the rate at which they had sexual activity with their partners increased after their breast augmentation and 70 percent said their sex life satisfaction improved.  Furthermore, 7.5 out of 10 women rated the procedure “worth it”.  So, what gives?

As with any plastic surgery procedure, breast augmentation is a life-changing event.  Women generally feel a boost in confidence and a renewed sense of appreciation for their bodies and recently accentuated curves, leading them to feel sexier and more feminine.  Most frequently, women report looking better in their clothing – and out of their clothing, for that matter – and finally feeling that the image reflected in the mirror better represents their own ideal self-image.  It seems logical that the demonstrative effect of increased confidence and sex appeal would have an impact on both women and their partners.  When you’re confident, you’re sexy – and it shows!

Clearly, we’re proponents of looking and feeling your best.  If you or a loved one is considering breast augmentation, we urge you to consider some well-intended advice:

• Be certain that you’re doing it for you and for the right reasons

• Do your homework and research your surgeon to be sure he or she is board certified in plastic surgery, their facility is accredited and that they have plenty of experience and an artistic eye

• Review before & after photos of your surgeon’s patients.  Take magazine photos to your consultation and be sure to speak openly and candidly with your doctor to ensure you’re both clear on your goals and what options are available to help you achieve them

• Be sure you’re going to be comfortable with your new look and choose a size that’s right for you, not someone else

Now, go get ‘em, tiger!

From Brotox To Beer Bellies – And Everything In Between

April 16th, 2012

Brotox (broh-tocks) noun:  the term used to describe Botox injections performed on a man.

Times, they are a-changing.  It seems more and more men are finally jumping on board with boosting their appearance.  And why shouldn’t they?  After all, looking and feeling your best doesn’t have to be just for the gals.

Countless articles and interviews have surfaced in the media regarding the growing trend of men seeking cosmetic enhancements, both surgically and non-surgically.  It’s been a popular discussion in the plastic surgery world – and we’ve noticed it in our very own practice.  In fact, statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show that over 300,000 men got Botox injections in 2011 (that’s a 10% increase from previous years!) and the number of men seeking facelifts increased more than 14%.  And it doesn’t stop there.  According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the top five cosmetic surgeries for men in 2011 are liposuction, rhinoplasty (nose surgery), blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), gynecomastia (enlargement of the male breast and reduction of such) and facelifts.

It begs the question: why the change of heart (or face, or body)?  There are a number of reasons why the fellas are turning over a new leaf.  Whether it’s to gain a competitive edge in the job market or simply to look as youthful and energetic as they feel, men are feeling more confident about the ways cosmetic procedures can benefit them.  For example, Baby Boomers are living longer, healthier lives than previous generations and seem to hold themselves to a higher physical standard.  Guys have seen the positive results that women have been achieving for years with cosmetic enhancements, and they are ultimately coming to realize that they too can utilize these techniques for the betterment of their own appearance.  Ladies, make way for the gentlemen – and give them a pat on the back for taking care of themselves and wanting their external appearance to reflect the youthful, vibrancy they are feeling inside!

Smoking & Surgery

March 22nd, 2012

ATT00013 228x300 Smoking & SurgeryThe personal rewards of having a plastic surgery procedure are endless and even fun!  But regardless of it being an elective procedure, there comes responsibility.  One such responsibility for patients is smoking cessation – daunting for any habitual smoker, we know.  Have you ever considered just why your surgeon asks you to refrain from smoking?  Don’t let the picture here fool you – your doctor’s not just blowing smoke and here’s why…

Aside from the obvious, that smoking and aging go hand in hand (yes, smoking ages you at an accelerated rate), smoking before and after surgery can lead directly to complications such as delayed healing, separation of incision lines, infections and poor scarring.  All of these complications can effect the aesthetic outcome of a procedure, making the visual appearance less than desirable.  And when you think about it, contributing to or encouraging any of these complications doesn’t make sense, considering plastic surgery procedures are meant to be a visual improvement or enhancement.  Still, it can be challenging for surgeons to convince smokers of the importance of abstaining.

Because we’ve seen first hand how big of a task this can be for some patients, we thought we’d offer some tips to help banish the butts.  Nicotine replacement therapies such as chewing gums, patches (transdermal patches), nasal sprays and inhalers are all options to help people quit smoking.  But the real culprit, when it comes to surgical complications, is the nicotine itself.  These methods can certainly aid in breaking the habit of smoking, but because they contain nicotine, when preparing for your procedure you would need to stop these products just the same as you would for actual cigarettes themselves.

Don’t get discouraged just yet!  There are plenty of non-nicotine therapies on the market.  Some of these alternative solutions are things like acupuncture, behavioral therapy, hypnosis and psychotherapy.  And there are even more resources at your fingertips like non-nicotine medications called Wellbutrin and Chantix – or even electronic cigarettes without nicotine.

In the end, only you can know which option is best suited for your personal needs, but the beauty of this whole situation is that you do have choices – and plenty of them!  The way we look at it, you’re making an investment in yourself, perhaps the ultimate investment, and doing everything you can to ensure your outcome is nothing but the best just makes sense.  We know what a challenge it can be, and we’re here to help.  We’re behind you every step of the way!

Happy New Year… Happy New You

Happy New Year from our office to you.  As we enter a new year many of us turn our thoughts to self-improvement and the annual ritual of making (and keeping?) resolutions as we become introspective—
What’s on your list?

Top 4 New Year’s Resolutions!

Dr Valentines Special

LOSE WEIGHT/GET IN BETTER SHAPE
Year after year, this is the #1 resolution! Over 66% of adult American’s are considered overweight or obese (see more on BMI on below). Setting reasonable goals & staying focused are the two most important factors in sticking with a weight loss program and the key to success for those with this #1 goal. Cosmetic Surgery is not a short cut to this goal…but perhaps can be a reward for your hard-earned efforts.

STICK TO A BUDGET/REDUCE DEBT
Ok, easier said then done, particularly in this day & age, however the best defense is a good offense. Keep a daily diary of all the money spent–even (especially the “small stuff”, like your daily latte’s). Once you know where your money is going, then you can take the steps needed to prepare a good budget that you can live with & make huge strides to budgeting your debt away. For more information on NO interest finance plans offered by our office, see below.

ENJOY MORE TIME WITH FAMILY/FRIENDS
Consciously decide to actively & purposely work on improving your family situation every day. Reschedule business activities if needed to make time for your family (remember kids grow up REAL fast). Start by  setting aside an hour a day for the family (no texting, cell phones off, ect…) Also friends are the glue that hold us together in hard times and the bond we need during the best of times. Cherish your friends as you would a treasured priceless heriloom.

QUIT SMOKING
Becoming a non-smoker is probably one of the best decisions you can ever make and is a life changing as well as a life saving decision. The resolution to become a non-smoker will also help you to live longer & enjoy the finer things in life! Certainly not an easy one…but well worth the efforts.

What is BMI and why is it important? BMI is your Body Mass Index and is an important factor in considering your overall risk factor, in life and in surgery. To calculate your BMI go to my website: www.DrHackney.net click on “frequently asked questions” for a BMI calculator. What am I looking for in your BMI? A BMI of over 30 is considered obese by several standards. However, depending on your sex, age and muscle mass, a BMI of 32 may be acceptable for surgery. The number one new year’s resolution is to lose weight and get in shape. If this is on your list, its a perfect goal prior to planning or undergoing cosmetic surgery.

Healthy BMI: 18.5 to 24.9

Overweight: 25 to 29.9

Obese: 30 to 39.9

The key to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight isn’t about short-term dietary changes. It’s about a lifestyle that includes healthy eating, regular physical activity, and balancing the number of calories you consume with the number of calories your body uses. Staying in control of your weight contributes to good health now as you age. Did you know that Colorado is the state with the “healthiest” BMI (less than 19% obesity*)? Worst state? No, not Texas (thankfully), but Mississippi with over 34% *of residents being obese.

I wish you and your family a happy and HEALTHY new year.

– Fred Hackney

Silicone or Saline?

The FDA approved the use of silicone get implants for patients 22 & older back in 2006. The number one question posed to our patient coordinators is “which one is better/safer”? The choice between silicone or saline is truly a personal choice. Most women do prefer the feeling and appearance of the silicone implant over saline. Did you know that Mentor breast implants are guaranteed for a life-time*? Call for more information and to find out more about Silicone Gel or Saline implants and which one may be right for you.
