Liposuction can be helpful for women and men who are of relatively normal weight but have isolated pockets of fat that cause areas of their body to appear disproportionate. These localized fat deposits may sometimes be an inherited trait and typically do not respond to dieting or exercise. Liposuction is often the only way to eliminate them. Areas that are commonly treated with liposuction include the abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, upper arms, neck and chin. While it is possible to undergo liposuction at almost any age, you will obtain the best results if your skin still has enough elasticity to achieve a smooth contour following fat removal.
Liposuction is performed by inserting a small, hollow tube through one or more tiny incisions near the area to be treated with liposuction. Incisions are usually less than one-half inch long and are placed within underwear or swimsuit lines. The tube is connected to a vacuum pressure unit and vacuums away the unwanted fat.
Tumescent liposuction is a technique in which the areas of fat are infused with saline solution and local anesthetic prior to liposuction. This will reduce post-operative bruising and makes the final skin contour smoother. Another technique used by Dr. Hackney is ultrasonic assisted liposuction (UAL). With this liposuction technique an ultrasonic probe is inserted in the areas to be suctioned, which will "liquefy" the fat before it is removed with regular liposuction. This technique is used to liposuction firmer or dense areas of fat, such as the back or areas that have been previously treated with liposuction. It is especially helpful in men who often have dense fat of their back, love handles and abdomen or have enlarged breast.
Liposuction is performed as a day surgery operation, however if you are having a large amount of fat removed you will need to spend the night at the surgery center or hospital where you have the procedure performed. You will be most comfortable if you are under a light general anesthetic during the liposuction procedure. A compression garment (girdle) will be put on you before you leave the operating room. You will feel sore from bruising and swelling but most patients only have discomfort for a few days following liposuction. You will wear the liposuction compression garment 24 hours a day for 2 weeks and then 12 hours a day for at least 2 more weeks. This compression helps reduce swelling, bruising, and minimize skin irregularities. You may return to your usual daily activities as you feel like it, but we recommend no strenuous exercise for four weeks.
