Otoplasty is the surgical procedure performed by Dr. Hackney to correct the cosmetic appearance of the ears. It is done to correct large or protruding ears. It is usually done as a day surgery procedure.

There are several surgical techniques used in the procedure; the most common one is to use an incision on the back of the ear to remove skin and reshape the ear cartilage. The incisions are closed with sutures, and when the scar heals it is barely visible. The patient is asleep during the procedure. When performed on children it is usually done after the age of five or six when ear growth is almost complete.

Following surgery, the ears are covered with a bulky dressing. There is some soreness and discomfort, which is controlled by medications. This generally lasts only a few days. Sutures will dissolve and normal activities can be resumed within a week or two, but a headband to protect the ears will be worn while sleeping.

Facial implants can enhance your appearance by providing proper proportion and balance to your face. They may be used in conjunction with other surgical procedures, such as a forehead, facelift or nasal surgery to restore a more youthful look.
Surgery to place your cheek implant is a day surgery procedure and you will be asleep for the procedure. Cheek implants may be placed through incisions made inside your upper lip or through external incisions, if the cheek implant is being done in conjunction with a facelift or eyelid surgery.

Following surgery, you may feel swollen and numb for a few weeks. These sensations will gradually disappear. External skin sutures will be removed in five to seven days. Sutures inside your lip will dissolve on their own.

You may have some concerns regarding the use of facial implants because they are made of silicone. Several years ago there was a restriction placed on silicone gel breast implants by the FDA. Cheek implants were never included in this restriction because they are solid and not filled with silicone gel.

Cosmetic chin surgery is usually performed to correct a receded, weak chin or a chin that is too strong and juts forward.

A receded chin can be treated with two different options, a chin implant or a genioplasty. There are pros and cons of each.

A chin implant is made of solid silicone and is available in different sizes. It is placed over the bony chin through an incision inside the lower lip or under the chin. It is often placed at the same time a face/neck lift is done, as a stronger chin will improve the appearance of the neck lift.

Genioplasty (Chin advancement)

For before and after examples of the chin advancement procedure, please click here.

An advancement genioplasty is a technique, which does not use an implant. With this procedure the bony chin is cut and moved forward to correct the receded chin, and it can also be moved downward to make the face look longer. If you have a receded chin the face may also look too short and moving the chin downward will help correct this.
If you have a chin that is too strong and juts too far forward, a setback genioplasty can also be used to move the chin backwards. A genioplasty is the only option available to treat a protruding chin. When the chin is moved back, the skin and fat under the chin may bunch up and make an unsightly fullness. Fortunately liposuction can be done at the same time as the genioplasty to correct this.

Dr. Hackney is one of only a few plastic surgeons in the Dallas/Fort Worth area who has the training an experience necessary to perform a genioplasty.
